Choosing the right truck - 1

Trucks are the lifeline of international trade, the connecting mechanism to most if not all shipping and logistics initiatives worldwide. Bringing us the food that we purchase and consume, the clothes we wear, and the cars we drive. Bridging air and sea freight from the Patagonian Desert to the Arabian Peninsula. It is important, then, to note and appreciate their presence, effects, and influence on our everyday lives. Here we present to you this year’s fun-facts, statistics, and interesting trends relating to the trucking industry and road freight transportation, particularly in the EU.

·         Daily, there are around 6.2 million trucks in circulation throughout the European Union. That is more than the entire population of Denmark and 11 other EU countries.

·         In Germany, where Donau trucks are headquartered, the freight transported                 by road on the country’s territory in terms of tonnes (2020) was the highest in the EU, just as in the previous year. Around 3.6 billion tonnes of freight were transported in the last fiscal year.

·         The average age of a European truck is 13 years old.

·         Trucks generate an annual trade surplus of €4.9 billion for the EU. As well as    contributing over 100 billion in taxes every year.

·         In modern economies, 85% of road freight tonnage is transported over distances of 150km or less, along routes for which no other form of transport would be realistic. Less than 1% gets transported over 1,000 km.

·         Improved safety- Despite the increase in freight transport, fatalities involving heavy goods vehicles decreased by 55% between 2001 and 2018. Showcasing an increase in safety protocols, better scheduling and time-management, as well as improved road conditions.

·         A growing EU export- Nearly half (50%) of heavy trucks built in the United States now come from European-owned factories, based on European technology.

·         435,976 trucks were manufactured in the EU in 2020. That is the equivalent of 1200 trucks every day, 49 trucks every hour, or nearly a truck built every minute.

·         Creating a more sustainable industry- It takes 60 modern trucks to equate to the emissions emitted by just one (1) truck operating in the late 1980’s / early 1990’s

·         An average freight truck requires 40% more time to stop, when compared to a car
